Conservation volunteering

Get active on our daily conservation and practical sessions and help preserve and enhance the unique landscapes of Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and the Kenwood Estate. Your work will help boost biodiversity, enhancing habitats and help protect the natural environment of the Heath. Click on the button below to join as a conservation volunteer to take part in a wide variety of activities including:

  • hands on practical management of our precious heathland, woodland, grassland and wetland habitats

  • gardening and horticulture tasks, maintaining our award winning formal gardens

  • habitat creation including establishing hedgerows, wildfower meadows and refugia for wildlife

  • grounds maintenance, including path and fence maintenance and controlling invasive species

  • upkeep of our playgrounds and teaching gardens

  • litter picking

  • building bird boxes, hedgehog homes and bat boxes

What we're looking for:

  • an ongoing and regular commitment; attending sessions monthly (or more often if desired!)

  • a passion for working outdoors and protecting the environment

  • people of all backgrounds, abilities and ages (under 18s can join our youth sessions) to get involved

  • enthusiasm - no prior gardening or conservation experience necessary!

  • reliability and the ability to work at locations across the Heath

All tasks are explained, and all tools, safety equipment and uniform are provided.
