Wildlife Interpretation

Our Volunteer-led Wildlife Interpreter programme runs free, fun weekend nature activities on Hampstead Heath, helping visitors to make lasting connections to nature and highlighting the Heath’s special wildlife species.

Launched by the RSPB in 2013 to promote urban nature to people of all backgrounds, Wild About Hampstead Heath was handed over to Heath Hands in 2015, with sessions being led by our Wildlife Interpreter Volunteers. It now engages over 3000 visitors per year with the Heath’s fantastic wildlife, both on the Heath and at local community events.

We run an exciting range of interactive sessions throughout the year, promoting a variety of wildlife and habitats on the Heath, including:

  • Bird watching

  • Pond dipping

  • Bug hunting

  • Wildflowers

  • Tree identification

  • Seasonal nature crafts

  • Citizen science surveys

And much more!

The sessions are free and everyone is welcome. Look out for our bespoke ‘Wild About Hampstead Heath’ cargo bikes and check our What’s On page to see when our next Wildlife Interpreter activity is on.

With the opening of our new Nature Interpretation Centre at the Kenwood Dairy we will also be running volunteer-led sessions at the Dairy - find out more on our events page.
